Love, Period 4

They don’t teach you it in school but

they teach you similes, analogies, metaphors,

which gets you close enough –

It’s when the girl you see in class 3 times

a week is the only one in the room

and everything else drops from the earth.

It’s when your mate eases an obstinate tear

from your cheek at break, and you laugh

into each other’s eyes.

It’s when your teacher’s mouth leaps

across a room, singing your future

in a careful lesson plan.

Revise hard, and you’ll learn it forever.
