Winter Skincare Guide: Swaps to Make

As winter closes in, so do chapped lips, dry hands and rougher skin, right? Don’t worry, we all face it, which is why skincare is so important this time of year. Within this article, I want to help and guide your winter skincare routine. So, I have rounded up a few tips and tricks I use, so you as well can enjoy these cold months and keep your skin glowy and fresh!

1. Crank Up The Hydration!

In the colder months, our skin tends to produce less oil so we need to apply more hydrating skincare products to keep the moisture locked in. Set aside light summer moisturisers and incorporate a cream that is a little thicker in texture, and one that is going to keep your skin looking plump and full of hydration. Hydrated skin is a game-changer when it comes to applying makeup and helping it last longer.

2. Acids

In winter, I still need to apply skincare that targets my skin concerns such as breakouts and maintaining a healthy skin barrier. In order to do this, I love to apply hyaluronic acid to damp skin (works wonders to boosting skin hydration), and then applying niacinamide on top to target my blemish areas. These two combined are my go-to acids to apply to keep my skin looking healthy.

3. SPF!

There is a common misconception that we don’t need sunscreen and SPF products in the winter because the sun isn’t as visible. This is wrong. SPF should still be applied daily, as the damaging UV rays still reach us and our skin, therefore it still needs protecting! I wasn’t aware of this until recently, so don’t worry you are definitely not the only one. I have realised more and more how important applying SPF is to protect our skin, so allow this to be a key step in your skincare routines!

4. Hands

My hands are pretty dry all year round due to my eczema, but in the winter months, moisturising hands is even more important. The colder air and constant movement can cause our hands to become very dry. I like to use Aveeno or any thick cream, CeraVe is also a great brand to try if you haven’t already as it’s super natural and so doesn’t irritate the skin.

5. Sheet Masks

There are a wide range of sheet masks out there that are suitable for different skin concerns.

In the winter, I love to apply a sheet mask for a quick boost of hydration, they also leave your skin looking so dewy and fresh. I like to apply one a week, but often I forget, so this step is one I want to incorporate more.
